If the name Don LaFontaine means nothing to you, here’s a brief summary as to why it should. Before he passed away in 2008, Mr. LaFontaine was known as possessing ‘The Voice of God.’ He was a legend within the voice-over industry, having voiced thousands of movie trailers, TV commercials, and even video game trailers. Whenever anyone tries to imitate the deep throated voice-over actor they usually clear their throat, aim for a lower a register and start with the words, “In a world…”
In the new romantic comedy In a World… Lake Bell plays Carol, a Los Angeles vocal coach who wants to break into the voice-over trailer industry, but there’s a problem; she’s female.
“The industry does not crave a female sound,” her father (Fred Melamed) explains. It’s not so much that he wants to save his daughter from wasting her time, it’s because he is also one of those ‘Voice of God’ announcers who has made a living following in the late Mr. LaFontaine’s footsteps, and the last thing he wants is more competition, particular from a woman. “It’s just not done,” he continues, so when Carol actually lands a voice-over trailer and the chance to be the voice of an on-coming and lucrative series of epics known as The Amazon Games, her father, whose vanity license plate on his car reads ANNUNC8, falls apart.
In A World… is an original. It takes us behind the scenes into an area of Hollywood of which we’re aware but never see; the voice-over industry. During its scant ninety minute running time this pleasant and often very funny comedy of deep voices and bruised egos keeps you constantly amused.
Lake Bell, who also wrote and directed the film, is a smart woman who has managed to showcase her talent in a unique way; she’s written a part for herself that stretches her talent and forces her to show what she can do, and she’s outstanding. When she auditions for The Amazon Games and records a trailer voice-over in the style of a female Don LaFontaine, one of the techs in the recording booth is so mesmerized by the sound, she states to herself, “Cannot wait to see that movie!”
In a World… is a small movie that will no doubt have a limited run, but it’s also one of the most entertaining and genuinely satisfying films of the summer. Like the tech in that recording booth, you should also be saying, “Cannot wait to see that movie.”
